~ Raggedy Look-Alikes ~

Back in the 1930's, a popular illustrator's Raggedy-ish characters were featured in books published by Saalfield Publishing Co., a competitor of Whitman books, located in Akron, Ohio. It is thought that Saalfield was so taken with her work that some stories appeared to have been written by a variety of authors of the day, in an effort to use some of her pre-existing illustrations. Puzzles and paper dolls were also created from her characters.

There was one 14" doll made from oil-cloth, that some think was made by Georgene in the likeness of Rags, though it had no company markings.(shown below)

When I fell in love with this little red-headed
Fairytale Character....Raggedy Ann
...I wanted to know EVERYTHING about her and the little girl named Marcella
and her daddy Johnny Gruelle.....
I was fortunate enough to visit the Raggedy Festival in Arcola, Illinois
(the birthplace of J.Gruelle),
but in my thirst for knowledge of this little rag doll and her creator
with all the legend and folklore included.
I was driven to learn about all of her friends
from Marcella's nursery......
and I have come to the conclusion.....that the story would not be complete
without including some of the more prominent look-alikes.....
and I feel that Rags is one of them.

I hope to be adding pictures of my "REPRODUCTIONS" of Fern Bisel Peat's little Raggedy look-alikes very soon !
