What is a CROOKSVILLE CAMEL......you ask???
Gruelle first introduced his
Camel with the Wrinkled Knees character in the book "Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel With the Wrinkled Knees" ( copyright 1924 and showing a white camel) In 1941 Georgene Novelties's began producing the first commercial doll patterned after Gruelle's camel.
Visit my "Camel w/Wrinkled Knees" page to learn more about him. He is made from felted tan cloth, with red fabric feet, a red bridle, yellow blanket trimmed with red and turquoise strips. His "googly" eyes were celluloid (other features were printed on). His release coincided with the Raagedy Ann and Raggedy Andy cartoon and the McLoughlin Bros. release of "The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees" showing a brown camel on it's cover.
He is a whimsical character doll, who shared many
exciting adventures with Raggedy Ann
and Raggedy Andy and the Tired Old Horse. When he was blindfolded and walked backwards he was able to magically find his way to Loonie Land.
Where he helped rescue a stolen doll!
I have created the original Camel Doll from the 1941 McCalls' pattern and have also designed a pattern myself with "attached" legs! My "Crooksville" version was first commissioned by a dear Raggedy friend, Carol... from one of the MSN Raggedy Boards that I am happy to be a member of. He is patterned after the Crooksville Pottery ca.1941......the large plate has a picture of Raggedy Ann & Andy riding this ADORABLE "checkered" camel. He and his riding companions have become one of my All Time Raggedy favorites and a favorite seller for many of my customers!
